The Terrorism Threat to the West -
Is the Worst Over?
With the fall of the Islamic State in Syria and the competition between Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, terror organizations look for new arenas in which to assert their power. To do this, terror organizations have turned to Western targets, perpetrating complex, deadly attacks in order to maintain their name across the world. This has manifested in a number of attacks across Europe and North America, including the 2015 San Bernardino shooting, the 2016 Brussels airport and metro bombings and the coordinated Paris bombings of 2016. This problem has further been escalated with the return of terrorist foreign fighters who have left Syria and Iraq in the aftermath of the fall of the Islamic State, with grandious attacks taking place in the West, including the 2017 Manchester arena bombing.
This workshop will discuss the current and future threat of terrorism facing the West, in the aftermath of the fall of the Islamic State. Experts will share their insight on the current situation in Europe and North America, and will discuss potential solutions for the mitigation of the threat of attacks.
