Prof. Liav Orgad

Liav Orgad is an Associate Professor at the Lauder School of

Government, IDC Herzliya, Head of the Research Group

“International Citizenship Law” at the WZB Berlin Social Science

Center, Faculty Member at the Berlin Graduate School for

Transnational Studies, and Director of the Group “Global

Citizenship Governance” at the European University Institute. He

teaches and researches in the fields of constitutional identity,

international migration, citizenship theory, global governance, and

law & technology. In recent years, Orgad was a Fellow-in-Residence

at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University, a

Visiting Professor at Columbia Law School and FGV Direito Rio, a

Marie Curie Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin, and a Fulbright and

Rothschild Scholar at NYU. 

Orgad has published in the American Journal of Comparative Law,

American Journal of Law & Economics, I-CON, and European Law

Journal. His book, “The Cultural Defense of Nations: A Liberal Theory of Majority Rights,” was published by Oxford University Press (2016). Orgad’s research was awarded the Russell Sage Presidential Authority Award and the Israel Science Foundation Grant. He has won the Dan David Scholarship Prize for “scholars of exceptional promise” (2013), Fulbright Prize (2012), Eric Stein Prize for “best article” by the American Society for Comparative Law (2011), and the Wolf Prize for “outstanding achievements of young scholars" (2010). Orgad has been granted fellowships from Harvard, NYU, EUI, Freie Universität Berlin, Fulbright, Rothschild, the European Commission, and a Global Young Faculty Fellowship by Volkswagen Foundation. He is a Member of the Global Young Academy and the Young Academy of Europe and the recipient of the European Research Council Starting Grant (1.5 million Euro).

Orgad holds LL.D. (Doctor of Law) and LL.M. degrees from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2011, 2005), an LL.M. degree from Columbia Law School (James Kent Scholar, 2007), and LL.B. and B.A. degrees from his alma mater, the IDC Herzliya (2003).
