After completing his law studies in Frankfurt (Main) and Bonn,
Hans-Georg Engelke began his professional career in 1994 as a
public prosecutor in Berlin. In 1999, he started working at the
Federal Ministry of the Interior as a policy officer and was
appointed head of division in 2003. From 2006 to 2010, he
headed the directorate-general responsible for counter-terrorism
and Islamist extremism at the Federal Office for the Protection of
the Constitution. After returning to the Federal Ministry of the
Interior, he held executive positions related to the Federal Police
and counter-terrorism before assuming leadership of the executive
staff in 2014, the position he held until his appointment as state
secretary. Mr Engelke has been State Secretary at the Federal
Ministry of the Interior since August 2015.
