ASG Arndt Freytag von Loringhoven
Assistant Secretary General for Intelligence & Security, NATO
Arndt Freytag von Loringhoven is NATO's first Assistant Secretary
General for Intelligence and Security. He took up his post on 1
December 2016. He is responsible for providing intelligence support
to the North Atlantic Council and the Military Committee as well as for
advising the Secretary General onintelligence and security matters.
His tasks include setting up the new Joint Division and thus merging
NATO's civilian and military intelligence strands. Prior to his
appointment as Assistant Secretary General he served as German
Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2014 - 2016).
Arndt Freytag von Loringhoven was born on 12 November 1956 in
Munich, Germany. He graduated from New College, Oxford, in
1980 (Master of Arts) and earned a PhD degree from the
Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany (1984).
He joined the German Foreign Ministry in 1986. Having served at the
German Embassies in Paris and Moscow he also held various posts in
the Foreign Ministry such as member of policy planning Staff, speech writer of the Minister, European
correspondent and Director of European Affairs. From 2007 - 2010 he was Vice President of the German Intelligence Service.
